Woodland Farm

Ownership/Management: (Kumar) Sivalingam Vasanthakumar

Woodland Farm is a 4.5-acre stock-free, veganic farm in Somerset, England, where I grows fruit and vegetables to supply my plant-based South Indian street food business, Kumar’s Dosa Bar. The land is leased from the Ecological Land Cooperative, an organisation that supports the development of affordable, low impact, smallholdings for ecological agriculture.

After decades working in livestock agriculture—first on my family dairy farm in Sri Lanka and later running my own sheep farm in the UK—I experienced growing moral concern and emotional distress around my work with animals. In 2019, with the support of my daughters, I transitioned fully away from animal farming, rehomed my flock to Goodheart Animal Sanctuary, and committed to veganic production and a plant-based food model. Since joining the Ecological Land Cooperative three years ago, I have been transforming former sheep pasture into a thriving agroecological, stock-free, veganic farm. Food has an incredible way of bringing people together, and over the years my market stall has become a space for people to connect over food and farming, where I am able to demonstrate that
food produced with compassion can nourish the land and community.
