Ownership/Management: Michael Ansell
Location: South Ayrshire, Scotland
The project is to establish a thriving stockfree hazelnut orchard in the Southwest of Scotland, showcasing a sustainable alternative to how hill pastureland can be used. The site (17.5ha in total) comprises areas of mixed woodland and grassland, and is situated on a steep slope. Initially the project will consist of two small hazelnut nursery plots (one on-site and one off-site) which will be used to propagate more commercial varieties suitable for nut production. Over several years, the 7-hectare grassland area will gradually become a fully-fledged hazelnut orchard with nuts being sold locally and in various forms (in-shell, shelled, nut butter).
