Cabbage Hill Fertilizer Company

Ownership/Management: Erin Riley

Cabbage Hill® Fertilizer Co.’s mission is to provide organic animal-free garden fertilizers that feed plants well and enhance soil’s microbial vigor. We aim to address the dilution of “certified organic” standards by providing the home gardener with a transparent and sustainable fertilizer alternative.

Cabbage Hill Fertilizer Co. was named after my pastoral hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At the turn of the last century, European immigrant families like mine cooked cabbage often enough they named the steep slopes of this Lancaster downtown neighborhood Cabbage Hill. What better representation for a rowdy fertilizer company than an inexpensive, nutritious, long-lasting veggie that can handle boiling and pickling?

Our labels don’t look like traditional fertilizer labels! The graphic art represents a shift in the future of gardening and agriculture. Our black cat reflects Cabbage Hill’s independence from the norm and the even rebellious nature of my commitment to organic, cruelty-free advocacy.

Erin Riley is the CEO and founder of Cabbage Hill Animal-Free Fertilizer Co. She became a Master Gardener in Pennsylvania in 1992. In 2009, at the height of the local food movement in Los Angeles, CA, Erin founded her edible landscaping company, Hope Gardens. She earned her landscape contractor’s license (CA-27) in 2017. Erin has planted organic gardens for homes, schools and non-profits and dedicated herself to issues like soil health, composting, community gardening and food justice. Now, with all those experiences under her belt, she is stewarding a fertilizer renaissance: elevating organic fertilizers past their dependence on animal byproducts by founding the vegan fertilizer company, Cabbage Hill.
